KYPers will be enjoying their spring break over the next two weeks - and as is our tradition we are scheduling a few college trips and other adventures! Follow along on facebook to see the full sized photos from our adventures, and watch this space for updates!
DAY ONE: Today we took a small group of high schoolers to CAL where they received a tour from David, a current student who is also a member of EOPS (Extended Opportunity Programs and Services). They also heard about a program called Berkeley Hope Scholars - which supports foster care and kinship connected youth at CAL. Special thanks to Jaimie at the EOPS office for his presentation about their services!
DAY TWO: Our college trip series continued with a trip to St. Mary's College in Moraga. Our group was able to sit in on actual classes, see a little of dorm life, participate in a panel discussion and eat a great lunch in the dining commons! Special thanks to the St. Mary's High Potential Program, which supports first generation and low-income college students, for being such amazing hosts! Also super thank you to our very own Lien, who is now an Assistant Director with the High Potential Program, for making this incredible experience possible! And props to Salma, a KYP volunteer and current St. Mary's student, for her help organizing this visit.
DAY THREE: Today, we went on an adventure to the world famous Google campus in Mountain View where we were treated to a tour of some of the complex and learned about a bit of the magic that happens in the land of Google! Thank you to Google staff Adrian Schurr who not only gave us a great tour, and hooked the crew up with snacks and goodies, but also emphasized the importance of doing well in school and going to college in order to make amazing opportunities like one day working at Google (and becoming a Googler) possible! This was a cool way to reinforce why we are always emphasizing the importance of academics to all of our KYPers!
DAY FOUR: Wrapped up week 1 of our spring break flow with a great community service effort today! Check out Oakland City Council Member Noel Gallo show our KYPers some love for their dedication to making a positive impact in Oakland! Thank you Council Member Gallo and team for your commitment to youth leadership.
